trying to install some Avon Old School Coke Bottle Grips tonight and ran into a problem, hopefully someone can help me out. I searched around and didnt find much help. The throttle side grip is really sticky on my new drag bars. I added some 3in1 oil to help lubricate and it doesnt do much. the first half goes on ok but have to actually push on the rest. I removed the handlebar end cap and checked that the bar is smooth. My stock throttle grip slides around perfect on the new bars. havent even gotten to the stage of attaching cables again.

Did I get a bunk set? tried sanding inside the grip in the rotation direction of throttle but that didnt do anything either. seems reasonably smooth inside, just too tight.

Any advice would be appreciated.

 

Did you buy them new? Sounds like someone stepped on it.

 

Sounds like the wrong size grip for your bars...I'd call the vendor to discuss. Hope your install mod efforts didn't ruin them for possible return...

 

Probably not the right grips for your bars. You sure your bars aren't 1.25", or the grips aren't 3/4" ID?

 

Im thinking you got grips for 7/8" bars and you have 1" bars. Most metric bikes use 7/8" bars and Harley uses 1" and 1.5".

 

Every set of grips I ever bought had one with a slightly larger ID for the throttle side. It's possible you either got a set for 7/8 bars (man, that would be tight, you'd probably have noticed on the left side too) or you got two left side grips. With lube (I use WD-40, very, very minimal amount) the grips should go right on with minimal effort- so it's not you, it's the grips.

 

Hey. The packaging says 1" but no way to tell on the actual grip. The left side is pretty tight but should work. Called Avon this morning and the are shipping up some new grips today. The tech there said they have been making their grips tighter lately as people were complaining they were too sloppy on the throttle. They will be tighter then Harley's but should still spin freely. Also possible the black powder coat is too thick on the bars. I will throw my old bars back on, glad I hadn't taken off the left side grip on those.

Was the ID of the throttle grip larger? I've never actually put grips on a H-D, just imports so I'm not sure what they're like. I know the cable pulley is directly on the grip for these bikes so I guess it's not possible to put the wrong grip on the wrong side. It's weird that it would be that much of a struggle to do something as simple as swap grips. On the next set you may want to leave them in the sun for an hour and see if it's easier.

 

make sure you don't push the throttle housing all the way in. it needs to be about an 1/8" off the end of the bar so it doesn't bind.

 

I agree with bmxatv. I got the same grips, and the throttle didn't twist/stuck. When I moved the housing out about 1/4 inch, the throttle freed up and I haven't had any problems since, so make sure you check that before you return them. I think the grips were just a little shorter than the previous ones I had, and were rubbing on the ends of the bars.
