Default 2009 1200 nightster problem

I was riding my 09 1200 nightster the other day and out of no where the bike turned off while i was going about 40. I was able to get it to the side but then could not get it to start back up. When i turn the key, all the lights and fuel pump turn on but when i try to hit the start switch it makes one click noise and nothing else .... really don't want to rely on the stealership to tell me what is wrong, so hoping someone has ideas on what might be wrong

Sounds like your battery connection is failing under a load. Check your terminals (both ends). If all seems well you might get that battery tested then determine if it is being charged when running.

+1. Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Battery terminals can vibrate loose if not fully tightened down. If they are tight and still have same problem could be voltage regulator, but my money is on loose terminal cables

I checked the terminals at the battery and yet still no luck ... I just replaced the battery about a month ago so don't think it would be that .... when i put the key in and try to start it all the lights light up the oil pump goes but once i hit the start switch is when everything turns off ... sure it is the battery connections?

Do a load test of the battery...just because it is new doesnt mean it is charged. Have a battery charger or a means to jump start?

I own a 2009 nightster also so I looked in the manual to see if I can help you. unlike these gentleman that helped with their solution..it doesn't come to me naturally lol..!st thing the manual says is exactly what they said..check battery cables or battery is discharged..2nd was it could be a blown fuse.

Test your battery make sure you don't have a short in one of the cells (voltage and as well as a load test). Check your connection to the ECU after fully testing battery first. I believe that year had some issue with the pins and moisture. Carefully clean and use some dielectric grease on them.

Did you check the ground to the bike connection ?

when it died, check engine light/battery light displayed? the 09's were famous for water getting into the fuse box causing corrosion. pull fuses looking for corrosion, clean and use dialectic grease. check your grounds!!! might be tight at the battery (considering a good battery and has been load tested and charged). follow the ground down to where it bolts to frame making sure all is tight. my thinking is if it died going down the road and all is tight and fuses are clean, check engine light and battery light should have been displayed. a fuel injected bike has to have no less than 9.9 volts to run. once at or below, it will shut off. needs that to run the computer, injectors, fuel pump, etc. by chance, have a harley repair manual? worth every penny if you dont. good luck. hopefully an easy fix

no check engine light or battery light came on ... I've checked my negative to the frame and it is tight and there appears to be no problems with fuses .... i guess im going to have to pay harley to figure it out.
