Thank you for this write up. Getting ready to pick up a basket case 86 and have no idea about condition of clutch, mileage and other things.

What years does this problem with the spring plate apply to? Should I think about this upgrade for my 2013 XL1200C?

Thanx!

Unfortunately it applies to your 2013....it has the rivets that are prone to fail after awhile.

How many miles on yours? Had a little over 30,000 on my '04 1200C when I put the new Barnett plates in, and the rivets were loose, but none broken yet. I've read of rivets failing in the 10-15,000 mile range, sounds like they're just a bomb ready to go off and there's no way to accurately say when it'll happen. Replacing that clutch pack with a rivetless set while it's still good is way cheaper than replacing a clutch basket or worse when it does fail. Plenty of sporties get high mileage on the original, but I decided mine had gotten their money's worth, and changed the plates while it was still a fairly cheap repair.

I ride hard, and mine were still good at 20K+ miles. But have seen plenty fail in less miles than that.

I replace mine with the Energy One Clutch because I did the NRHS 1250 Conversion and the stock clutch was slipping.

I noticed after getting close to 1000 miles on clutch that a fluid change and adjustment is a good idea. Being that clutch is new it still may be wise to use factory intervals as new again to be safe. My adjustment wasn't off much but did change slightly as I have a few more threads on the adjusting sleeve than I did before.

It appears as if the snap ring came off as I see the diaphragm spring seat hanging there.

I put the clutch guide and throwout bearing back in. I got a new clutch basket and pressure plate. The Barnett extra plate clutch kit was totally fried after a week. Put in the old clutch pack and it shifts better and the ungodly godzilla screech it made before is gone.
Here is the barnett clutch pack I took out
