Sportster axel
I have a 1996 harley sportster and want to put an axel license plate mount on it and was wondering what the size of The rear axel was.. 1"?

It's 3/4". 1" came along much later.

Yep! In your case SportyBob, both front and rear axles are 3/4" OD.
