Default Mikuni carb cleaning?

Does anyone have experience with these carbs? Is it possible to pull the carb and clean the passageways and orifices with a can of carb cleaner? Or, will it require a rebuild kit and complete disassembly? Also, how can I find out what model carb it is? The only markings I can see, while it's on the bike, is "Mikuni".

What year bike?

It is most likely an HSR 42. Although it could be an old HS 40.

Do a Google search for images of these carbs and you will be able to see which one you have.

You can get a parts illustration, tuning manual and owners manuals from sudco, the importer for these carbs, by free download.

Thanks I'll check out the link! The bike is a 1997 883 (standard model I think?) that was converted to a 1200 using most, if not all Screamin Eagle components.

You probably have the HSR 42, the HS40 went out of production in the early `90s I think (a great carb).

Are you having an issue with the carb?

It idles a bit rough, sounds like the rpms should be higher while idling, and the throttle response seems a tad sluggish. The previous owner didn't run the bike much for the past 3 years so I figured there might be some buildup and gunk in the carb. I ran a couple tanks of gas with seafoam through it last fall and it seemed to help some.

Well, after some more research and messing with the idle adjustment, I think everything is okay. After looking at a few youtube videos and then adjusting the idle speed a bit faster, I think it's right where it should be! I'm new to harleys and didn't know they are supposed to have that "potato" sound. I was thinking it should have a smooth continuous idle sound.

The throttle response is a minor issue at the moment. So, I'll continue with some more seafoam treatments. That is unless you guys have other suggestions! It's is a fairly slight hesitation, but I don't think I should even notice it that much.
