Question Fussy little gremlin

I have a 98 1200c and when I put the key in sometimes the odometer doesn't turn on and I have to try again. Or it does but I have to wait awhile sometimes it feels like forever, but the neutral light and oil pressure lights are on and the starter works. Other times I turn the key forward and nothing happens. Its happened to me twice now but fortunately I was stopped the bike has just shut off on me and I had to turn the key off and turn it back on again then start.

The switch is bad? Or is there something else I should look at? I checked the battery cables and they are good and so is the battery and it seems all connections are tight. I'm at a loss, and it makes me nervous I don't want my bike to break down in the middle of an intersection.
