Default Wider tire on 2012 XL 1200 Custom

Hello
I would like a wider rear tire on my 2012 XL 1200 Custom. I don't want to change rims, it is time to buy a tire and was wanting to know if my 150/80 B16 could be replaced with a wider one?
Thank you all

Shinko 777 170/70 16 is the fattest I have seen on a stock rim. There are several members here as well who use that same tire. Get the matching front tire too. It is a way better tire than the OEM.

OK, my front tire has almost an 1/8" to reach the tread wear bar. Replacing it would seem like a waste of tread and money.

Once you realize how smooth the ride is with the Shinko over the rock hard OEM spec tire is, you will wish you had replaced both. When you realize the traction in a down pouring rain storm is better than the OEM tire on dry pavement, you will wish you had done both. Do NOT use OEM tire pressures. Drop the max psi on the sidewall by 10% as a start point and fine tune to your weight.

JP cycles page does not have any 170 width to fit my bike. Do have to modify something to accommodate 20 extra what ever they are units?

I have a 1/2" distance from the sidewall of the 150 to the belt guard. A portion of the belt guard is plastic and be could narrowed with a sander or removed all together. I figure 20mm would be about 13/16" and about 7/16" on each side. Any play in the tire would result in rubbing and didn't even think about the bolts inside of the fender. I would really like to hear about someone who has put this on my bike. What would be the next size down from the 170 70 16?
