Okay I tried everything you guys mentioned except not sure how to check for intake leak. I have cleaned and blown out the carb 3 times. Set the mixture screw to the base setting of 2 turns out and tried to fine tune from there, still getting a carb pop when I first twist throttle. Once revved up all is fine just when I drop to idle it goes to crap on me. Plugs are still black sooty. First set today was worse than the second. Haven't put in a crank position sensor or someone mentioned plug wires too. Hooked a hand vacuum pump up to drain tank out the fuel line and it would lose just a little vacuum as it sat but that could also be my cheap pump. Took the petock out and made sure the filter was clean. Could it be low vacuum at idle? Should I try to find a vacuum line at the local parts store? Dealer is 80 miles away so not a quick run for parts. What kind of resistance should I get on my ohmmeter kn my plug wires? Thank you all for your help

Pull the crank position sensor out, they don't always show any outward sign of being bad but sometime they do, see if the face has a crack in it, mine did when it failed, they aren't expensive and it is just a matter of when yours fails if it has not already failed. One screw and a plug is all to taking it out and replacing it, no that expensive either.

If the plugs where black I'd also be checking the enrichener, they can get gummed up and not return to the closed position when pushed in. All you have to do to check the fuel line is put a vacuum pump on the vacuum switch pull the fuel line and see if you get a steady flow of fuel.

the little voice inside my head that I call Captain Obvious suggested I check the error codes and they turned up a crank position sensor error. Replacement on the way hoping that solves the problem

If that doesn't do it, check the needle and diaphragm. If the needle is not returning to its maximum low position when you let off the throttle, it will allow too much fuel through the main jet at idle, resulting in black plugs. If that's the case, it can be caused by a needle that got bent during rebuild, gunk in the throat, or a small tear or misalignment of the rubber diaphragm. Been there myself!

I am having a very similar problem with my 2005 XL1200R and I'll be very interested to learn if the crank position sensor is the culprit. The exception is that my bike was not burdened with stale gas over the winter, I am just getting a VERY rough idle once the bike gets warmed up.

Does anyone have a good source for the crank position sensor for a 2005 XL1200R? I've tried my go-to dealer, Surdyks, but they don't have it, nor does J&P, or Drag Specialties. I just hate paying the standard dealer's rate, some I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

This is the best answer, enrichener, and enrichener cable .
plugs getting black in short time is the clue..
