After having to call only 2 dealers I found the Crank Position Sensor. Picked it up, had to wait a day because of rain, and installed it yesterday. I then went out for a long ride late yesterday afternoon and my problems are solved! Runs great and revs normally from idle with no issues. What a relief!

Glad it was an easy fix, to many times we look for the hard fix.

Thanks, me too! If it wasn't for the XL Forum it would most definitely had been a HARD fix! It's an obscure fix to most, yet a common problem on the '04-'06 Sportsters. Story after story has guys tearing their carbs apart for rebuilds, hunting for air leaks, chasing non-existent wiring problems, and swapping out electrical components one-by-one, all to no avail. Dealers refuse to accept the obvious problem (available through the Diag Codes). A little research in many places pointed me in the right direction the first time, and I love keeping the $$ in my wallet instead of the dealer's register! Also, Parts and Maintenance manuals are priceless!

So I finally got around to trying a crank sensor. Bought a used take off from Woz for $20. Technically it was the wrong part number but the only difference I could find is that the wires were about 4 inches too short. But for the price I decided to cut and solder in extension pieces just to see if it would work. After a little carb tuning (not perfect yet) the bike is running like it should. I am still going to order the correct part before spring and do it right. My only regret is that I tried this after changing the mixture screw. But thanks to this forum I have it going again, I would have given up and taken it to dealer if it wasn't for your help. Thanks everybody.

And after I get the correct part I will sell my used soldered up sensor for the same $20 shipped that I paid if someone wants to use it as a test part like I did.
