My 05 roadster had a ticking as well,, was told it's normal,,, so I checked out several other sportys and yep, they all did it,,, the pinging is not right,,, try using a higher grade of gas, if that doesn't work, take it back to the shop,,,,

I have an '03 that has made noise since I bought it. Everyone told me it was normal, and it hasn't failed yet. I know guys that didn't realize it until they changed from a full face helmet to a half helmet. If you wear a full face helmet, then you won't hear it as much.

hi jr,
i have a 05 1200 XLC and don't hear any ticking sound. sounds strange to me (no pun intended), and i'm sure you've checked oil, etc. re: pinging, what octane fuel are you running? does the pinging go away when you slow down or ease off the throttle?

Jrarus,

Do you know where the sound is coming from? General area? My '05 makes a little squeeking sound that appears to be coming from the rear sprocket side. I am pretty sure its not the shocks. Is yours coming from the engine or somewhere else? My engine makes no strange sounds as far as I can hear. Also when I accelorate, it just goes without making any extra noises. Only when she's warming up will it make some strange sounds. After that, it runs fine

My '98 makes a ticking sound also, it also pings if I use 87 octane so I use 92.

Ticking?? Would it be valve train noise that you are hearing?

My bike "tings" when I get on the throttle on a higher gear when I should be in 1 gear lower. Since I'm always trying to save gas by keeping in the highest gear (yeah right!) Try downshifting to a lower gear and see if the noise goes away. I switch from 89 and 93 everytime I fill 'er up, so I don't believe it has anything to do with the fuel. My noise sounds as if it's coming from the front end, under the tank somewhere. The ticking, I'm not sure...it's probably normal maybe something like Johnny said--valve train noise--normal. Mine has always made the ticking noise, so I assumed it was normal. It's not that bad, and everyones bike makes that noise--everyone that I know anyways. Some people are just bothered by the noise and hear it everytime they are on their bike, where other people such as myself just consider it a normal bike sound that goes with the 1200 engine. John
