I have no problem checking a hot oil level but Im not comfortable asking this young lady to perform this check. I would like to know exact wording out of the manual if anybody has this info handy. As I mentioned earlier, I put in 2.5 qts and think Im in the safe area. As a matter of fact, Im riding with her tomorrow and will do a hot check to see where it is at. Thanks
Here's what my 2007 manual says.

OK, was able to do a hot check this evening and the level on the dipstick was right in the middle of the 2 marks and that was with 2.5 quarts. We also got stuck in traffic (stop and roll for about 20 min.) and everything sounded great, I am pleased and I think she is too! Thanks for all the info here. I will try and talk her into getting a manual also.

Half way between the 2 marks is perfect for most folks on here.

I'd pull the carb and rebuild it just because it's 12 tears old and check the idle jet, it should have a 45 in it the stock 42 jet was ALWAYS to small. I've had problems with the enricher sticking but a good cleaning always fixes it. I also always up the primary jet 1 size, I can't remember what the stock size is, sorry.
As far as heat most people have no idea how hot it is to had a large V-twin between there legs and there are a lot of people that don't know you shouldn't check the oil on those old bikes cold, the drain back valves for the oil tank always leak and there is quite often a 1/2 to a full quart in the bottom of the crankcase instead of in the oil bag.
