Default low fuel light comes on too early

The low fuel light on my 2014 Sportster 883 Superlow comes on when there is 1.8 to 2 gallons left in the tank. This is aggravating to have the light come on so soon. Is this normal and what can be done about it.

The low fuel lights are notoriously unreliable. Some lights come on right away and never shut off, some never come on. Some are inbetween. Sometimes the problem is repairable and sometimes a repair is never found.

Best advice is to set one of your tripmeters to zero everytime you get fuel then monitor how many miles you have driven.

Mich is right on... my '08 light comes on at half tank- crazy! But I drive by the number of miles. When the light is on is time to start paying attention to the mileage on the tank of gas.

There is a fuel level sensor in the tank, which may be tunable. I haven't seen anyone claim they have modified it to give a different result. Ever since the two-way gas tap was invented we have been presented with this 'problem'. Get to know your bike and how far you can ride after the light comes on. You can do that in three tanksful.

Thanks guys. I'm coming up on the 1000 mile service next week. I will tell the dealer about it. I get around 50 MPG fairly regularly.
so I should know where I'm at.
