low fuel light comes on too early

The low fuel lights are notoriously unreliable. Some lights come on right away and never shut off, some never come on. Some are inbetween. Sometimes the problem is repairable and sometimes a repair is never found.
Best advice is to set one of your tripmeters to zero everytime you get fuel then monitor how many miles you have driven.

There is a fuel level sensor in the tank, which may be tunable. I haven't seen anyone claim they have modified it to give a different result. Ever since the two-way gas tap was invented we have been presented with this 'problem'. Get to know your bike and how far you can ride after the light comes on. You can do that in three tanksful.
