Aside from clutch plate....nothing equivalent to the cam tensioners on the TC88's that fail around this mileage?

<typed something in wrong post, removed>

I've heard of some stators needing replacement around 40k, but there is some debate on weather or not it is caused by using the "wrong" type of oil in the gearbox. For a while there were some bad voltage regulators on the early rubber mounts but that would have probably failed by now.

Other than that, just minor stuff, like the battery cover side plate is prone to come flying off (clips are not the greatest). The fuse holders are known to allow water to get in and corrode the connections.

My '06 is virtually the same bike, I wouldn't be too worried about the mileage. I'm at just over 20k with zero issues.

I would read the thread on checking for trouble codes and use it to check out any bike you look at. Not that you would have to know what the code means, but at least to check if it's throwing an error code. 9 times out of 10, for me anyway, it's a loose battery connection, but it wouldn't hurt to add that to your checklist when looking over a Sportster.

Argh! Rog48, if you were in Northern CA I'd be at your house with a trailer right now.

You cant go wrong with a 2000-2003 XL1200. They are available on Craigs list and most are really solid bikes. Easy to finds parts for and for the most part start em up and go. I have a 2002 with an S&S super E and my bike starts right up everytime. No sputtering. No stalling.
Just my two cents.
