Default New Street Bob....New pipes..... need advice?

I have a new Street Bob. Got some new V&H shorts shots for a great cash deal. I've had to have mapping done on dirt bikes. I've had to block off the air getting dumped into the exhaust on other metric bikes to stop the decel popping. I think I understand sorta how intake and exhaust works together.

My questions are... I've lost torque because I've lost back pressure (installing some baffles so maybe that will help a bit). The popping is terrible on decel. Plan on getting a better air filter which will make it more lean.

Do I?
1- Pay for a DYNO tune which is $1000 at the dealer? Brutal!
2- Buy a FP3 Fuelpack tuner from V&H? $400
3- Have a local private shop remap for $375

The local shop builds drag harleys and claim they have the process dialed in. If so what is the dealer charging me $1000 for?

Any help and input is greatly appreciated!

Certainly the dealer is including the price of the tuning device in with that $1000. The local shop will need some sort of device as well. I'm not a fan of the FP3 but others have had ok luck with it.
Just because a shop builds drag bikes, doesn't mean they can tune a bike for streetability. Suggest you talk to others locals that have used your options and see who is satisfied and who isn't.

Can the Factory ECU be unlocked and a new map dumped in instead of adding a tuning device? That's how I've had it done on all my new KTM's

The device is the interface is required to reprogram the ECM. I'd recommend a quality flash tuner like the TTS or PowerVision. Stay away from piggyback tuners. Whoever you choose to do the tuning, do your homework first on their abilities. All dyno operators are not alike. Just because someone builds drag bikes doesn't necessarily make them good at tuning a Harley for streetability.

Ok. I do realize that just because you can build a drag bike that does a good burn out doesn't make you a super tuner. What I was trying to say is these guys seem to know what they doing and offer mapping services on many types of machines. I'm just trying to figure out the best and cheapest way to get my Bob running correctly and is it worth adding a air filter setup and such.

$400 for FP3 is ridiculous. There are MUCH better deals around.

Thanks for the info. I was reading to stay away from "piggy back" tuners however appears that's the only way to tune a HD as the ECU is not unlock-able as far as I can tell. Gonna use a PC5 and a reputable tuner for the job. Rubber side down!

Piggy back tuners are not the only way--in fact, not the preferred way. PLEASE do your homework to avoid disappointment.

I would talk to the tuner that you're planning on going to and ask what device they prefer to use. There are flash tuners that have a great reputation around here. The PC5 will lack some adjustability that other devices have if you plan for future upgrades beyond intake and exhaust.

Oxymoron: a combination of words that have opposite or very different meanings.
Almost never is cheapest the best tuning solution.
