Krome Ave Construction
Need some local knowledge. Taking a couple of friends down to Key West next Monday on bikes........his bucket list choice. How is the construction on Krome ave? Is it worth trying, or should I just take them out to the turnpike. Will be heading through their before noon if that matters. Thanks in advance.

G'day mate.
Don't know the answer but I would suggest at the end of the TPKE in Florida City to turn LEFT onto Card Sound Road and take them that way.
It is 7 miles longer, a NICE ride, NO back ups, you pass Alabama Jacks (biker place) just b4 paying $1 to go over a very HIGH bridge. At the end turn right.
Then you just go straight. IF you do not already know that cool way to go down the Keys.

I was on Krome about 3 weeks ago. It still sucks because some of it is still 2 lanes which you can't pass on because there are cones dividing the highway. However, it's better than a year ago. I'd say go for it, stop at Cafe 27 for a cafe con leche or, even better because Cafe 27 is quiet on a weekday morning, get coffee at Dade Corners gas station opposite the Miccosukee reservation casino.
The traffic moves but there are a lot of heavy trucks carrying produce and of course construction trucks. You can still take Card Sound Rd after you get to the outskirts of Key Largo and stop at Alabama Jacks, or take that road when you come north. Other stops are Gilberts at the beginning of Key Largo, Jimmy Johnsons Big Chill, the gift store with the big lobster for a photo etc etc.

Thanks for the info.....have made the trip several times, seems like we find more and more places to stop on the way. The trip takes longer and longer. They guys don't want to ride the turnpike if possible, that's why I asked about Krome ave. Will have to make a decision when we come out of the Everglades off 41.
