Product Review - Cooling Vest
Hey Crew,
Steevo here. Been out riding with my new "cooling vest", and I really, really like it. The one I got is a "Joe Rocket" Sahara vest. But Harley and others make similar products.
Starting out in the morning, I wore it dry. It's comfy, and adds a layer of visibility. But once the heat sets in, take it off, soak it in water, wring-out the excess. The outer layers feel dry, doesn't soak your shirt underneath. But it definitely works to keep you cool. At highway speeds, it seems to work good for about an hour, then gradually tapers off. For the next several months, I doubt I will be riding without it!
A few more tips:
If you store the vest in a large Ziploc bag, you can use the baggie to help you soak it. Fill up the bag with the vest still inside, then take the vest out, squeeze out the excess water. If you are lucky, you can time your final soak of the day with the final leg of your journey. The ideal situation is to have all the water evaporated from the vest before you arrive at your destination. If not, you either have to hang it out to finish drying (it will feel dry, but you will know by the weight of the vest), or you could put it back in the Ziploc bag.
