I was at south beach today, but drove down for the home show and brunch. Yeap, same number of bikes as saturday. I cant see why the city would back it up... Then the organizers call it "bike week"!!!! Really ??.? I think a bike event just evolves, you just cant creat it.

The arrival at South Beach on Saturday was great. 100+ bikes roaring in with a MPD escort. There was parking along A1A opposite 8th and 9th street, then overflow went to a side street. the Village was a bit "small" and tucked way back from the street, with not great signage or visibility. It was a good reason for a ride. It will never be like Daytona where the area wants the bikes and dedicates parking for the weekend. It needs more vendors too. and it was ungodly hot during the day.
I'd do the ride/arrival again in a heartbeat. The rest of it needs work, to be sure, but it was better than nothing and marks the start of the season down this way.

The crowd Saturday morning when we pulled in was typical South Beach; lots of tourists, 4,000 valet parkers, but the east side of A1A was bike parking only. The tent city didn't draw too many folks mostly because it was a bit far from t he sidewalk and not all that visible if you didn't know what/where it was.
There were a bunch of riders (200 bikes will do that) but they were not enough to overcome the usual demographics. But that is what makes South Beach a cool place to people watch, imo. I had fun. Didn't stay past 3 due to the heat, but I enjoyed it. It would have been nicer with more bike visibility and more vendors, but it was a quantum leap from last year's event. As the 2nd year of the event, I'd say it went well. Next year it should be better and hopefully the city will help out a bit more. Will it ever be a Daytona type event? No.
