Default 06 ultra leaking tranny fluid after oil change

I just bought an 06 ultra with 17k miles on it 2 weeks ago. I decided to change all the fluids just so I know what I have. It had no leaks before I changed the fluids. I put bel ray 20w 50 engine oil in engine, bel ray gear saver in primary (red oil), and bel ray big twin tranny oil in tranny (red oil). I noticed after driving it about 50 miles when I parked it, I had a red drop on the ground. It appears to be leaking on the right side (sitting on bike). It looks like it is wet under the starter and running down. It is not coming out of the rubber u shaped vent hose on primary side of tranny. I haven't bought a service manual yet but the dealer told me it takes 24-26 oz of oil in tranny oil. When I checked my tranny dipstick it reads it is over full. If I over filled it, would it cause it to leak like this? If so, should I drain some out or will it stop on its own? Thanks in advance.:icon_confus ed::i con_confused:

If the dipstick reads overfull, then it probably is. Do you know exactly how much you put in?
I would suggest making sure the correct amount is in there, Then spray the underside down with brake clean and get it dried out so you can see if it is still leaking.
If it wasn't leaking before you touched it....and it is leaking now...That pretty much says it's something you did.

Being overfilled is why its probably leaking and coming out of the vent. Oil also expands when it gets hot making an over fill condition even worse. Id adjust the oil level before doing anying else.

Overfilled transmission would force fluid out the breather in the area you mentioned.

Get the OEM HD manual, best investment you can make if you work on your own bike.

There are many sources to oil quantity requirements, perhaps even the users manual, that should have come with your bike.

It is not coming out of the rubber "u shaped" vent hose. Is there another breather that I cant see around starter? I will suck some fluid out of it tonight and get the level right. It almost apears to be coming out around the oval shaped "switch" with 1 Allen head bolt and a wire coming out of it. I assume this is the neutral switch. Thank you guys!

Ok guys, I believe I have success! I pulled about 5 oz out of the tranny. I was told to put 26 oz. I finally found a hd service manual today and it says 20-24 oz. I verified again that the leakage wasnt coming out the vent, and it was not. The more I looked at it and put some better light on it, it appeared to be coming out around the speed sensor. I bought an oring for it ($0.95, yes I said $0.95). I replaced it and cleaned everything with brake cleaner as suggested here on this forum. Then I drove it about 12-15 miles and it is dry as a bone. Maybe it was leaking all along but since I had too much in it, it leaked worse and I did go from traditional oil to the red bel ray. Maybe the red just is more noticable. Thanks for all the advice!!!

Good to know the solution was easy. I had been concerned that too much fluid built up pressure and took out a seal deeper in the machine causing a whole lot of work.

Wish my leak issues had been that simple!

Back on the road again!! Ride safe!
