It all depends on if you paid sales tax at the time of purchase. I bought two vechiles last year (2012). I bought both at a dealer and paid sales tax when I bought them. When the tags were do this year, I was able to opt in to the new system and only had to pay the tag fee for 20 some odd bucks for each. If I had bought from another individual, and not paid taxes, I would have had to pay taxes to the state when my tags were due based on what they say the value of the vehicle is.

Could be worse. In Nebraska, it cost me almost $1400 the first time around because you have to pay the initial taxes on the cost of the bike/vehicle. Next year, it will be about $500.

I bought my 2010 Road King about this time last year. When i got my Tag papers this year it said $238. I took my papers when I went to get the tag it was $20 because I paid enough tax when I bought it so at least that worked out.

^^^^^exactly what he said^^^^^^
if you pay taxes at the time of purchase, then this actually benefits you,
if you didn't pay taxes when you bought it, this will come with some sticker shock

It's the state's way of cashing in on private sales which they were previously missing out on.

I just paid $60.10 ad val tax for my 95 Fatboy today ....all totaled I've probably paid over a grand easily in annual ad valorem taxes on this bike already.
Last year the 2011 Sportster cost me 70.90, this year I opted in and it only cost 20 for the new tag ...no more ad valorem tax. The sales tax was $455 when I bought it January 2012, it seems the old bike is costing more in taxes then the new one ....WTF?

I got hit with this when I just registered my 2010 limited and 2005 Dodge Ram from KY to GA. $1600!! Sucks, when you're not expecting it, but as others have said, next year only $20.

I renewed mine last Dec on my 2012 Ultra. Since I paid the 6% at timie of purchas it only cost me $20 to get new tags.

But like everything else in this world, everyone else has their hands deeper in my pockets than I do.

I moved here from Wisconsin. I thought the ad valorem was BS when I first moved. Im much more comfortable with the sales tax when you buy the vehicle. Its the way it was in WI except there it was $90ish a year to renew for 4 wheels. Bikes were every 2 years so $20/vehicle is just fine with me. Otherwise getting socked with hundreds on your bday sucked.

I don't miss the "Birthday Tax" one bit... When I bought the Tri-Glide it was on the old system and I "converted" over to the new system at my first renewal as it was much cheaper in the long run. Trading the Tri-Glide for the Switchback worked out well as I owed no taxes since I was "downsizing".

On a side note I noticed my new license plate appears to be silk screened, or painted and clear coated, instead of stamped metal. Plus the plate now shows the owners county name as well unlike the older stamped motorcycle plates.
