Default chrome abrasion rust prone?

Guess I need to raise my hi way pegs a bit. I hit the road with one of them letting it drop over climbing a pretty steep hill yesterday. I put them where they are comfy with my long legs, toe on peg, heel on floor board

So a little 1/4 inch roundish scratch spot on the bottom/end of left peg Pretty good scratch but not super deep. Do i need to do/put something on that to keep it from wanting to rust? What?

Or just buy a new peg when it gets bad?

If its through the chrome, then it can rust. Clear fingernail polish will seal the scrape and prevent rust.
