Default Oil Change Mystery

I have been changing my own oil and filter for years and on HD's since 2006 with my old '06SG. I realize the preferred method is to change the oil with the motor warm but I've always done it on a cold engine and never had a problem. I always measure the oil that comes out and it's usually within a few ounces of what's actually in there. (around 3 3/4 qts.)
Today I did my first oil change on my new to me 2010 EG. To my surprise only 2 1/2 qts came out and that's all that went back in.
The bike was on the jiffy stand, level ground, in my garage. Same spot I always changed the oil on my '06.
Does anyone know why only 2 1/2 qts came out? I did have the dipstick removed while draining and I did change the filter.

What do you mean by that's all that went back in? Is that all you chose to put back in? Did you measure it on the dipstick after that's all you put back in?

Did 2 1/2 quarts register on the dipstick when you checked it after filling?

I measured it on the dipstick. Put 2 1/2 back in and it brought the level to halfway up the scale where it should be when cold.
After filling I started the motor and watched the oil pressure gauge, for the first few seconds it was at "0" then it jumped right up to slightly above 32.

Hmm, I would ride it for a good ride and get it nice and warm and then check to see where it's at and add as/if necessary. Since you said the bike is new to you, I assume this is the first change on it you've done?

Got the bike in June with 500 miles on it. The dealer did 1000 mile check-up so they did a change at that time. It now has 4300 so I did another change today. I'm sure plenty of dirty oil was left in there because the oil was a little dark on the dip stick.
