By all means, check the throttle cables.

Fwiw, I ran into this on my 04 RK this spring. I'd created the problem somehow while replacing cam tensioners. Probably from cranking the engine over with the coils disconnected. Anyhow, in some fashion I'd caused the computer to have a handfull of error codes, and to get screwy and apparently hold the idle speed control open, causing the high idle.

The fix was to find and clear the trouble codes. The light wasn't indicating any codes or problems. It wasn't until I went through the steps to directly check codes that I found them. Cleared them, restarted the bike, and all was fine and has stayed fine since.

Warranty neither expressed nor implied. ;-)

you know I just re read the original post of the bike is idling at 1200 RPM. Seems to me most folks shoot for 900-1000 and a lot like the 1000 rpm idle.
Hell, I thought we were talking about 2000rpm or something like that.
I had a 2008 Road king that would go over 2k at idle until I did the ignition switch 5 cycle
Dang! I've been hummin that 25k tune all morning....

it normally idles around 800-900. 1200 is a very different rumble to me. the weird thing is, it doesnt happen occasionally. every now n then, the idle will go back to normal. or it will fluctuate a lot

called the dealer, and he said to try to fire it up and see if it runs smooth. it starts up and runs fine, so i took the bike in to the dealer, told him about the erratic idle and the exhaust shooting fire. the service guy spends 5 minutes asking me 'did you get it tuned recently' and refused to beleive the only work ive had done was the 25k service in his shop. he refuses to beleive me that there could be a problem, so we go out to look at the bike, he tries to start it, and NOTHING. it wont start. he asks me again if i had it tuned recently. what the **** is wrong with this tech? he already decided the problem with my bike before the ****er even looked at it. finally after about 5 minutes of fiddling with it, it starts and continues to idle about 500rpm above normal. finally he goes 'must be a fueling issue, we'll check it out'

at least ive got an extended warranty/maintenance plan with these guys, so it wont cost me anything, but i cant beleive how bad the service is

It's only a backfire. Real men light their cigarettes off the backfire.

you could or have some one else idle it down to the desired idle RPM.
I dont think we need to go rape and pillage at the dealership just yet.
Oh hell man. Hows about we just do a drive by and only wound em in the drumsticks?
