Default Fuel Gauge Removal

The fuel gauge on my 01 RK quit working. I have been trying to pull it out of the tank but it just will not pull out. I can rock it slightly back-and-forth while pulling up but the damn thing will not come out. Short of throwing a lit match down the other hole to blow it from the inside out, are there any suggestions maybe from someone else that encountered the same situation??

Hang on, I can refer to my notes- I did one last year...it was easy.

I'll try to get back sometime tonight.

If you have a carbed RK, I have some fuel gauges for sale cheap:

Harley part number 75073-04

Goes on quick and easy, get an LED fuel indicator for your CARB Twin Cam. fits 01-03 FXDL, FXDWG, FXST/S/B, FLSTC/F/S and 01-02 FLHR Road King models ( carb only, no EFI). Replaces stock dummy gas cap gauge

$85 shipped/48

of course your in tank sender has to be good.

I had a 2000 softail with the fuel gauge on the left side of the tank where the second gas cap used to be in the old days and it just pulled out after unplugging the wires from underneath the tank, it is prolly the same...

Hey, I like the match idea. If you decide to go with it, let me know, I'd like to be there to see it.

Yep, unplug the wire beneath the tank that goes up through a hole below the gauge. It probably does not have enough slack to pull the gauge out completely. Also, when it does come up out of the tank, you don't want to pull it far. The other wires are also short, and you barely have enough room to lay the gauge aside, to get a screw driver in there to remove them.

Understand... exactly what I did but the gauge will not come out of the hole.
