It's not out of reach- you just need some time, a bike in good shape and a body in great shape.
If unsure, plan loose and think about stopping and storing the bike and flying home if it gets to be too much.
loose "planning" makes for fun- figure out where you need to go and find 2 lane roads to connect those places.

Wow, I thought my recent trip through Colorado/Utah at 4,800 miles was epic...21K miles would be a blast. Planning to meet a buddy next year in Milwaukie then doing Route 66 before heading north again. I'm taking the long way there - going down south and through the Texas Hills. Should be a bit over 8,000 miles. That's the plan anyway.
