Need a little clutch help guys!
Ok gents. Been gone for a while, home now riding the bike! Clutch felt real spongy and lever/cable was near the end of adjustment. I went in and did an internal clutch adjustment. Hand snug on the allen screw and backed off half turn. tightened down lock nut. When riding the bike and giving throttle, I can feel the clutch lever loosening (coming inward) and hard to find neutral. Adjusted it twice and I just changed the oil (after 5k) just in case. A little help guys please. Just adjusted the internal clutch again! Cable is tight. Spacing looks good on the lever. Feels right but same result. Going to take a short ride. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

First off the bike needs to be cold when you adjust the clutch. Instead of turning out 1/2 turn, come out 1 full turn. Adjust slack out of cable and ride it. I have found that the full turn out allows the clutch to lock up better. Adjusting it while it's hot is useless.

Do it cold but do not adjust cable slack to the point where you cannot fill the clutch when you lever it. If you have 1/8 or more slack at the lever when you screw in the adjustment at the clutch, that's plenty. Then break the lock nut on the clutch and screw the Allen wrench bolt till it bottoms and then turn it 3 or 4 more turns on in. Now back it out till it's free. This insures you are truly filling the no play and not tight threads from over tightening the fine thread lock nut which is real easy to have happened. Now run it in to no play. Lever the clutch and let off. Back off the screw and repeat screwing in till you can get the fill of when you lever the clutch you can really tell when the no play position really is at that point. If your cable is free in the sleeve and the threads are deburred, you can actually fill the play disappear as you lever and screw in the adjuster at the clutch. Now, back off screw 3/4 turn. Snug the lock nut 72-120 in lbs. (note that is only 6 foot lbs..just a bump with your palm) Now set the cable slack to 1/16" at the grip checking at both left and right turns of the handlebars to each stop, snug the cable lock nut and slide the boot over the cable length adjuster. Your clutch will be the best it's ever been. The start from no play kills ever one till they get the hang of it. Some people take 3 or more times to figure it out. Also, once set correctly, it will rarely require and more adjustment. Sure, you can check it, but I bet you will find it will actually change in 40K of miles.

my manuals say "room temp' so in the 70's.
and that's how I do it.
It's getting really chilly out there, so....
as above - loosen the cable adjuster.
adjust the clutch
then adjust the cable ( which is more about adjusting the lever action)
misadjusting the cable will screw with you clutch adjustment
