Default Headwinds H4 LED headlight vs HID

I just got the Headwinds LED headlight and installed it on the glide. Having a Road Glide I refuse to spend $600-$800 for the daymaker head lights.

The install took 5 minutes. I pulled the headlight trim, removed the headlight housing and bulb, put the new bulb in the housing, loctited the fan and screwed it onto the bulb, plugged in the ballast and stuck it to the outer fairing. Then I put it all back together. The most difficult part of the install was removing the headlight trim without messing anything up.

I snapped a pic with a 35W single beam HID on the left, and the Headwinds h4 LED set to bright on the right. As you can see the LED is much brighter than the HID. I won't be riding this bike in the dark again until tomorrow morning but I'll try and get some pics so you can get a feel for how well it lights up the night.

this unit uses an external ballast which is extremely small (smaller than the slim ballasts for my HID) but be aware you need to find a place to mount that.

I am looking forward to being able to see a bit better in the dark.

Don't get me wrong on the Daymakers, they are great, but for that price I'll do something else.

My money tree is not producing like it is supposed to.

First, thanks for taking the time to share your experience, with pictures. It really helps. I have my heart set on the Truck Lite myself. But yeah, I have never heard of an LED with a ballast? What's up with that?

$99.95 and a 1 year warranty make me a little uncomfortable. No claims of 50,000 hours or anything like that. Let us know about the radio static also, that would be my only other concern.

It's not a ballast, it's more like a distribution block. It takes the bikes headlight plug, and converts it into two outlets. One being for the LED bulb and the other being for the fan.

Headwinds calls it an LED driver but I call it a ballast. Not sure on the reasoning for it but I figure if they decided to include it in the kit there is probably a good reason. I'll email them and see if I can get an answer on that.

There is no trucklite for the Road Glides.

Looks interesting and this is the first I've heard about it. I'm curious to know how well it works with the stock reflector? Does it throw light everywhere or is it focused? Let us know how it works out.

That makes sense. I was confused because the op used the word ballast.
