I have a Metzeler me 880 mu85 on my 2002, it's like 143mm. I did trim the belt guard a little. Dunlap makes the elite lll in a mu90 which is very close to the same size and should work.

The front tire still has a lot of miles left on it
so I would like to get a matching tire for the rear
but wider, if possible. Or maybe not if people have
done it before and it doesn't handle well.

Your stock tyre was probably an MU85, which corresponds to a 140/85. If you have the later 1 1/8" narrow belt you should find that a 150/80 will fit with ample clearance, however check load rating, as there are suitable versions, but also some lower rated tyres for lighter bikes. You are looking for a load rating of around 76/77.

A 150/80 has the same rolling diameter as the MU and to be frank I didn't detect any change in handling, just looks a bit better! If you have the wide 1 1/2" belt you may struggle to get it in - some members have reported getting one on, but I had to change to the narrow belt on my bike.
