Strip down a E-Glide instead of Street Glide?
http://www.hdforums.com/forum/tourin...eet-glide.html

Issue

Is it better to buy a Street Glide or better to strip down an Electra Glide and add touring parts?

In this thread, posters show pictures of their bikes, explain and give recommendations on an E-Glide with added parts vs a Street Glide, and how they did their set-up

Default Strip down a E-Glide instead of Street Glide?

Just wondering how many people decided to buy and strip down a electra glide instead of buying a street glide? I thought I was going to buy a street glide, and add touring parts to it, now I think I may get a E-Glide and quick disconnect the tourpack.

lots:

it takes less than 30 minutes to swap to 13" shocks, add the T/P, taller windscreen and put on the cushy seat

the detachable makes sense if your T/P is on & off alot- otherwise it takes less than 30 minutes to unbolt it...bolt it back on.

....... lots of folks spend buckets of $ to go the other direction.
..... always made more sense to me to start w/the full boat & take off what you don't need.

Guess I'm one of the guys who spent buckets. To me the Street Glide is just a better looking bike with or without the touring parts.

If trying to save some money, another way to go is a Road King, and put a fairing on. Although either way, you'll have the touring front wheel and fender going that route. That may or may not be desirable for your use. Another cost to change, if wanted to.

I'm debating the same thing with a Road Glide Custom vs Ultra. Given equal mileage and year the price is about the same, maybe a little cheaper to go with the Ultra. Just having a hard time deciding because I like the paint/wheels better with the Custom, but like all the extras with the Ultra.

I debated the same thought for quite a while. In my area, used SG where doing the same money as the Ultra's. I ended up buying an 08 Ultra. Adding the detach kit right now..(winter project). I like the idea of having the touring bike when the Mrs. wants to go along...and on longer trips. Take the TP off, and swap the cushy seat for a sleeker seat and I have a SG. I like the versatility...

the best bang for the buck is buying a used Police bike. a low mileage 2011 FLHP only costs around $11k around here. all you gotta do is add a stereo ($200-800 pending how fancy you wanna get), a new seat (if you dont like the solo), and a tourpack
