Cool Fuel gauge issues

I have an `06 Road King (FLHRI). Fuel gauge worked fine for years, although not 100% accurate. Some time back I was riding and the fuel gauge went to empty and the low fuel indicator illuminated. I had almost 4 gallons in the tank.
Then the gauge went back to normal and the low fuel indicator went off. As time went on this happened more frequently. Now it shows empty almost all the time. Thought it might be the float but that seems unlikely.
J&P told me the fuel level sensor and the sending unit are 2 different parts. A local Harley dealer said it's all one part and it's about $220.
Has anybody had this experience? Was it the sensor?

Looks like one part.

Go to:
http://www.shopronniesharleydavidson.com/

Click the link for the "OEM Harley Davidson Parts Finder" at the top of the page.
Select your Year.
Select your model.
On the page that opens find the link for "Fuel Pump Assembly"

Look at Part number 21. (75205-06)

It's 200 something but you can find it cheaper at Surdyke or Kutter at 20% off no tax and free shipping.

Or you try to find a used one either online or local...

Default Thanks

Yep, that looks like it. It's broken down better on the website than in the service manual. Much easier to see. Thanks for your reply, Ronnies looks like a pretty good website.

Replace fuel filter also while you're in there.

Smile Found it!

After hours of frustration and spending $200+ on a fuel level sender I finally found the problem with my fuel gauge. I bought a new fuel gauge, then when pulling the pins out of the connector block I found that the yellow lead was in the WRONG HOLE!!! Moved the lead to right position and voila, no more issues.
What a bizarre issue. How it ever worked is beyond me. My best guess is that when it was plugged together at the factory somehow it made a connection. Over the years the connection must have become more and more intermittent until it rarely worked at all. Thank goodness the the parts manager at the Harley dealer allowed me to return the gas gauge I bought the day before. A shout out to Gator at Woodlands Harley-Davidson.
