Sounds like the only real gotcha is the left grip if it is glued on. Sounds manageable. If I can do this myself I save $150 which is what Harley wants to install them - that is $150 that can go toward my headers and pipes

Do I need to glue the grip again if I take it off? Is there something to use rather than grip glue?

Thanks!
I used hairspray, I read somewhere that worked but I think the left over goo gone stop it from sticking. It can be turned but it can't come off.

If you're going to swap bars I suggest running all the wires internal for a nice clean look, not all that difficult just takes time.

So is the throttle wire inside the handlebar on a road king?

My question is - how hard is this to do considering the throttle by wire stuff? I am a bit mechanically inclined, but not a gear head by any stretch. The bars seem pretty reasonably priced.

Anything tricky to be aware of?

Any other ideas for bars that are similar to the Heritage that would not require new cables etc...?

Thanks everyone and have a great day!
I installed Heritage style bars on my 2011 after my first tour also. They were about $80 but the dealer wanted about $300 for the install, so I did it myself. I found this VERY helpful thread with step by step instructions WITH PICTURES, that made it a snap. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...road-king.html Couple that with the service manual instructions and it's an easy job. Read all the way through the thread first because others made suggestions that make certain steps even easier.

That is a great thread on the handlebar change. The only thing I would say is that the rear screw in the nacelle that holds the clamp cover on does not have to be removed just loosened and then slide the cover back and up.

Thanks everyone and that is/was a great thread on how to swap the handlebars. I did not see that post until I had started and finished. I took it slow and used the service manual and got the job done. It was actually very rewarding since I am not that mechanical, but I feel good that I saved $150 (dealer cost to install).

One thing I did notice is that the left grip on my bike was not glued at all. Never twisted at all so that is how I put on the new grips. The switch housings go over the grip and when torqued they are tight and not moving.

All-in-all it was a learning experience and one that I am now happy I did myself.

The ride is a lot better in my opinion over the stock bars - more comfortable.

Thanks again everyone - your responses were very helpful.

I have the online service manual, but the section on remove and install of the bars is a bit lacking in my opinion.
I have a set of 2014/15 RK bars if you want them for cheap PM me if interested.
