Default Modifying my V&H Big Shot Duals

I have these VH Big Shot Duals, they sound ok but the mufflers are pretty small, maybe 2.25" OD.

So, I'm thinking of cutting the header and heat shields so I can mount slip-on mufflers. I like the quality of these pipes, they are pretty nice. I just want a deeper sound from my exhaust. The header and heat shields are nice quality and it's 1.75" OD, so I think it will make a good set of true dual head pipes.

Anyone here have experience cutting heat shields? Seems like it might mess up the chrome a little.

It's gonna' mess up the chrome a lot !! You just might want to check into a new exhaust system and sell the Big Shots.

I thought about getting new duals, but I figured I could save money by using these. And, I really like these pipes as headers, the quality is very good. Besides, I don't think I could get very much for them, everyone is buying 4" exhaust systems and these are maybe 2-1/2 inch.

Well, I did it. Pretty happy with the results.
Took some careful measurements, and started cutting.
Hundred-dollar 4-inch slipons from the local swapmeet, and there it is... sounds much better too.

And now, I have some fishtail tips for sale:

Looks great, but I'm curious - what did you do to the cut ends - did you have them re-chromed?

The cut ends of the shields?
No, the chrome didn't come off.

Ok, thats a bit surprising, but you'd still have exposed metal.

Got a close up of the cut?

I was surprised at how well the chrome turned out. It is a bit rough since I used a die grinder to cut it. I was planning on doing some corrosion control then, getting a Chrome band to cover it up. Since its near the saddlebag, it won't be noticed by most.
I'll try and get some pics posted up.
