Looking to buy a used Ultra. Lots of bikes out there with a lot of miles. Just want opinions on how many miles is too many?

Yeah, I'll go along with that! Unfortunately, a lot of times there is no way of knowing that. That's what scares me!

Keep looking. There are so many bikes with low miles out there, you're bound to find one.

I bought my 2012 with a little over 14K on it.
Owner had all the maintenance records since he bought it new in 2012,I'm the 2nd owner.
All maintenance was done at our local HD dealer.
I didn't feel worried about my purchase, less than 5K miles per year.

I usually stay in the 20s or lower if I can, 36 tops. I once bought an EVO with 75K miles on it and regretted it, then took a bath on it.

I bought my SG with 30k on it. 1 owner, almost 3 years of use. Bought it from the original selling dealer who had all the service records. I got a fantastic deal on it due to the "high mileage" and then bought a 5 year ESP for it.

The only issue I've had with it in over 25k miles I've put on it in 1.5 years is a small oil leak the first winter. And I ride it hard as hell...knowing that my engine is covered

Welcome to HDF from the UK. What's to be scared of?! These bikes can and do go round the clock - in other words cover 100k miles and more. When they cry enough they can be rebuilt and do it again. The only thing to be concerned about IMHO is service records. If you buy a bike from a dealer it will have a dealer service history, regardless of how many miles are on the clock.

However give us a clue to where you are looking and what years you are looking at, also what you consider to be a high mileage! We can be more helpful with that info.

If mileage is a concern, there are plenty of low mileage bikes out there. I bought my 07 last year with 9000 on it. I ride 10000 plus a year so I wanted a low mileage bike so I wouldnt be rebuilding or trading in a year or two. That said, a bike with 40000 on it wouldn't scare me off if its the right bike. Like grbrown said, these things can go far if maintained properly. Good luck with your search!

Not sure of what your budget is but here is a nice one in Iowa. 14k and priced about right for a 12.
