Default TC 88 Cam Chain Tensioner check

Well I opened up the cam chest of my 04 Road King Custom at close to 25k miles and the cam chain tensioner pads look to be in great shape!!! So now I can spend my money on my rear fender and bags and a new paint job then next winter to a cam chest upgrade! I know have peace of mind to ride all season and not be on edge every tenth of a mile i ride.

How did you inspect your secondary? Pull the cam plate out or use a mirror?

I had one the other day that actually had a bunch of material left but had cracks running down the center. Had to unload the tensioner and look at the face of it to find it.

I didn't feel like checking my 2006 Road King because I would have done cams, cam plate conversion, etc. while I was in there, so I traded it for a 2014 Road King

Must be in the air. I pulled my cover today, not so lucky outside had about 1/3 rd wear. Didn't need a mirror for the inner. Could see a crack and wear. Now to decide replace the tensioners or Andrews 26a cams and tensioners.

Both times I went in the check mine the outer looked "OK" with maybe 1/3 wear, BUT, the inner was worn all the way to the metal frame of the tensioner and missing large pieces of material. After the second time I went with a hydraulic upgrade (Fuel Moto 98 upgrade too).

I procrastinated as well at 74K and Indy was surprised that they were still as good shape as they were. They surely needed changing but I was having cams done, Barnett Scorpion clutch and replaced the stator as it looked about cooked.

I didn't pull the cam plate I just did the mirror inspection and both of them are not not even close to being 1/3rd of the way worn. No signs of cracking or extreme wear. The previous owner may have had them changed but I cannot remember if he said he did or not but am comfortable enough with the way the look to ride it all year long without worry. I just went and double checked again after reading some responses and it is now sealed up and will not be opened again until winter sets back in and I put an upgraded cam plate and cams in, maybe even a 95" kit. For this year as soon as it gets painted I will ride the **** out of her!

When I bought my Fat Boy it only had 12K on it. I replaced the cam plate ('07 plate), cams (26N), oil pump (high output), and tensioners (hydraulic), When I opened it up, I found the inner bearings and the outer bearing had already been changed, the spring tensioners looked new, and it had adjustable rods too. Obviously someone had already been in there and done an upgrade. But since I had all the parts already I replaced everything anyway. Still have the old plate with the cams and tensioners installed sitting in a box on a shelf in my workroom.

I plan on doing a feuling camchest upgrade next winter. Hydraulic tensioners, adjustable pushrods, upgrader cam plate and bearings, upgraded oil pump, and new cams, maybe even a 95" kit. But for now I wanted to check it out while I have it torn down for paint. I got my peace of mind and am ready to rip this year.
