Default Gas mileage for a 2013 Road King?

I recently purchased a 2013 Road King Police. I'm a bit disappointed in the gas mileage. I'm only getting 28 mpg in town and 35 hwy. Is this normal? It's a stock bike with the 103 CI engine, EFI, 6 speed transmission.
Is there any way I can improve the mileage? I plan on doing a lot of traveling on this bike & would like to get better mileage if possible, for the sake of making fewer fuel stops. With this mileage I can't really go more than 200 miles between fill-ups with the 6 gallon tank. Significantly less in town.

I was hoping for 35 in town and 40 mpg highway. So am I living in a dream world? Is this actually as good as it gets?

Feedback appreciated.

I have a 2013 Road King. Stage one with the factory tune and Vieds. I was right at the advertised 42 hyway bone stock, and still at a solid 41 now. But how I ride it can really make a difference. Riding in a pack like a fool and I can't get out of the high 30's. But if I drive like I am not in a hurry, I can get it back into the 40's. Also, lugging the **** out of it 'cause you think six gear is gonna save gas is the worst thing for fuel mileage. Keep out of six gear till you need it!

How fast you ride on the highway will have a big effect. 75+ you will start drinking more gas/mile. Add wind and you lose more

Nearly same set up as above. Around town, all bets are off as sometimes I ride like I stole it. On the highway, anywhere from 40 up to 45 under more ideal conditions.

As he also said, careful not to lug the motor as that causes low mileage too.

Use High Test fuel, don't lug it, 6th is for highway speeds only. Yes, you should be doing better than that.

Mine's all stock...for now, except for the slip ons. Been getting what everyone else has, in the 40's at hwy speeds. Might check mixture, plugs, clean jets and use 100% gas.

This is an interesting point - is it possible that in Indiana (where the OP lives) they've already switched over to summer formulations? If so you'd likely see a slight drop in mileage.

Im on a 2012 RK and I only get in the 35-38mpg range also. Mine is bone stock. I've been wondering if a stage 1 intake would improve that.
