Default Not if, it's when...

I always say it's not if you wreck your bike it's when. Well, my when was this past Saturday. The wife and I rode down to Bisbee for breakfast, on the way down at the junction of Hwy. 90 and 80, two cars were merging onto 80 which I was riding on and the first one saw me late, slammed on the brakes and was rear ended by the second, missing us by just a few yards. I thought wow that was too close for comfort and proceeded on to breakfast. On the way back going through Tombstone we had to stop for a funeral procession for a retired fireman. After we got going again we were heading south and I decided I should stop at the Circle K and gas up and looked in my right mirror for cars, saw one was there at which point my wife said look out in front of me. I looked up and saw a late 80's Toyota p/u stopped ahead. I was at about 30 mph and hit both brakes as hard as I could and down shifted furiously and rear ended the truck. I swear ten more feet and I'd have stopped, but no. After impact dropped the bike (2010 Ultra Classic) and took inventory of the body and wife, no road rash thank god! Bystanders helped me get her up and off the road. The driver of the p/u was ok and minimal damage to his truck which was already in bad condition. He didn't have turn signal on or brake lights. Town Marshall showed up took all my stuff, the other guy couldn't come up with valid insurance card. After all was said and done, the Marshall did not cite me and sent us on our way. Damage to the Ultra is minimal considering, front fender bent, the light on the front of the fender destroyed and the chrome bumper trim ruined. All in all I feel very lucky as it could have been worse. The anti-lock brakes did their thing, the crash bars kept the bike from falling on us and I was able to ride it home. My right wrist is a little sore and she has a bruise on her shin, could have been much worse. Take the Ultra in for damage estimate Wednesday and we shall see what happens from there.

Glad you're ok.

My friend and his wife had their "when" on Friday evening. A minivan pulled right out in front of them. They hit her in the front fender, she didn't stop, the bike spun and slammed the side of the van. His wife had bumps and bruises, he broke his wrists. Brand new Road Glide. Less than a month old. They just traded up from an 05 Street Glide. He goes for wrist surgery before the end of the week.

You have to ride like everyone in a cage is trying to kill you.

Could have MUCH worse! Glad you both came out as well as ya did. ................. I had a soccer mom total me and a '97 Ultra on 10-15-01. Took me a year to be able to ride again, and still hurts me every damn day. ......... It killed the Ultra though!

Sometimes it just pays to be lucky, or maybe in your case blessed. Things could have been much worse. The metal, plastic and rubber stuff can be fixed much easier than flesh and bone. Consider yourselves lucky and we are glad you are here to tell of your misfortune.
