Default 04' RK, Adding HD Cruise Question

I was kicking around adding cruise control to my 04' RK. The cruise 4-pin connectors are prewired inside the RK light nacelle. When I look at the parts lists at Ronnie's HD on-line they list different wiring connectors for the cruise switch. 04' uses a 4 pin, 05-06' uses a 2-pin, 07' HD changed to a new type of connector. Just curious if anyone know why the 04' and 05/06' are different, and what the extra 2 wires are for on the 04'? I found a set of used 05' controls already wired, but since they have the 2-pin connector, I'm thinking they won't work. Anyone have any addition info.?

I looked at a used set of RG/EG controls but they use a 10 or 12 pin connector (all in one), and have a fairing mounted on/off switch vs. the RK of/on switch on the left handlebar control.

All three years use the same cruise module no. 70955-04

I'm really confused now, I just checked the wiring schematic in the 04' FLH Shop manual, and it only shows one wire for the off/on switch coming from the left side controls, and only two wires coming from the right side to control the cruise operation (set - / resume +). That would match up with the 05/06' 2-pin connectors, yet the on-line parts fiche show a four pin connector for the 04' RKC I may have to disassemble the light/nacelle and see exactly what free connectors are in there.

Have you already sourced the module? When I did my '05 Electraglide that was the hardest part. I wound up ordering from cruisemont.com as they are obsolete with HD.

Thanks for the response. Wow, pricey, if I can't get the parts, I'll stick with my $30 throttle lock. I read that HD superseded the older module (70955-04) with a newer no. 70898-04. 70955-04 is what was listed on the original 04' instruction sheet I found searching the net. There is older used modules around from time to time (ebay/here in the classified). Another thing I see is that the RK module had studs in it for mounting. The EG/RG modules had threaded holes and used bolts for mounting. Learning more each day….it would be so much easier if HD keep it's part supply going for at least 20 years, but for some folks I guess it's searching that is part of the fun :-)

I took the headlight out today, and the wiring on my 04' RK cruise connector inside the nacelle is a 2 pin, not the 4 pin connector as shown below in the HD 04' instructions (J028066). The 05' controls I found should work ok. I'll double check the wiring on the 6 place connectors to make sure they are in the same location on the connector as on the 04' once I get them, I'm assuming they are. I hope this helps someone else as they search for parts or installation info. The HD instructions are not always up to date. Perhaps they copied it over from the 02-03' instructions. It was interesting that the 04' on-line parts fiche also list the 4-place connector, when the shop manual shows a 2-place. They also tell you that to re-install the throttle friction wheel assembly. This is not used after you install the cruise control, you can put a dab of silicone or use a pop rivet to fill the hole.

"in the next step, the right side Deutsch connectors are black;
the left side Deutsch connectors are gray.
9. Trace the right handlebar wiring harness to the 6-place Deutsch connector and disconnect connector halves. Note the existing harness routing and cable ties securing har- ness to handlebars. Remove and discard the right hand control and harness assembly.
10. See Figure 10. Obtain the new right handlebar control and harness assembly (2) from kit. Install the new harness 6- place connector in same place as connector removed in the previous step. Locate the unused 4-place connector half (next to the 6-place) and install the 4-place connector from the new harness to the 4-place connector in head- lamp assembly."

CC is awesome and I miss it from the Road Glide but the throttle lock on my Road King has been set to maximum for so long I have to twist the throttle back, as if I did not have a throttle return cable. Even on moderate hills I can be hands free.

Save the money and by a throttle boss. This is attached to Kuryakyn iso grips. My 06' RKC cruise went in 2010. I have been running this set up since. On the new Limited I just use the $5.00 throttle boss in addition to cruise. I've vary rarely use the cruise.
