Started leaking oil on my trip ???
Just came back from a trip to the Catskills area. On my way, I started leaking oil, enough to cover the under side of my bike and start spraying up on to my bags. My buddy that was riding behind me said there was a mist on his windshield. When parked, I was dripping, nothing substantial puddle wise but enough to cause concern.
I kept an eye on my oil level, and it wasn't really low enough to be concerned. Actually when I first noticed the leak and checked it , it looked to be a tad over full.
I added about 1/4 quart before we left as it was down a little. When I got home it was down about 3/4 of a quart.
The trip put me a few miles over 60,000 miles so it was due for an oil change. I changed all 3 holes and put new o rings on the drain plugs. I ran it in the garage for about 10 min, revving it some to get it hot to check the oil level, and I am not seeing any leaks, but I'm concerned about it and am looking for some things to look out for.
What could cause this? What all should I check?

I would put a torque wrench on every fastener. A few years back I was leaking trans fluid
I found one bolt missing two other ones were backed out. Put in a new bolt and torqued the others and that took care of it. I also put blue locktite on them. I had about 80k miles on the bike at that time.

How far forward under the engine/trans did you see oil?
Check these places:
If at the very front - oil cooler/oil filter
If middle right side between engine/trans - engine oil supply/return hoses
Rear - oil pan (if engine oil), main shaft seal (if gear oil)
If oil found on left side of front belt pulley - IPB seal
If oil found on right side of front belt pulley - trans main shaft seal
If gear oil on right side of trans - exhaust bracket allens
Oil out the air filter (which is typical) probably won't end up with oil on the underside of the bike.

On another note, I did notice 2 things when I changed the fluids. My oil filter was really stuck on, so I may have forgotten to lube the gasket before I put it on. Not sure if that could cause it to leak. I also noticed that both the oil and trans o rings were really flattened out. I may have over tightened the last time. I am hoping it was coming from a drain plug. She sat all nigh in the garage after running it with no leaks.
I did find that my rear brake pads are shot, so I going to get them changed out tonight. Then I can really put it to the test and run it out on the street to see if I'm still leaking.
