Default Stock 103 upgrade questions.

I have a stock 103 in my 05 Electra glide cvo. I was wondering what all was out there to get more power out of it? Cams, kits, breathers, etc.. It's got a lot of power I would just like more and don't really know where to begin. Any ideas or suggestions?

Wow... that's a wide open question.....

The answers will range from a stage I (air cleaner, exhaust, tune) all the way through cams, heads, big bore, gearing.....

It's all about your budget and what you are looking for....

You might want to do some searching on this site as most of this has been discussed numerous times. There is a lot to read about options and opinions.

My opinion would be to spend the cash to do it right, whichever mods you decide. Trying to cheap out will usually cost more in the long run.

If you can't do it yourself, make sure you do your research on whatever shop you decide to use.... there are some awesome shops.... and some real hacks out there.

Good luck, for me, modding is part of the fun!

You balance cost vs reliability vs power

you get to choose 2, the 3rd is determined for you.

the best bang for buck power gain is stage 1.
you'll get 7 to 10 more horsepower, retain reliability and mpg. cost ranges from $300 DIY to $2000 drop it off at a shop

if you want more, once the motor is built ( cams, heads, bore, injection, tuning) then you have an un-ending search for the next weakest link in the chain- you'll be doing the clutch, maybe some bearings, maybe blow the belt off.

after all that you'll still have a bagger with heavy handling and stock brakes- you can look at that with suspension and brake upgrades

or for 1/2 what you would spend on the above...you could buy a ducati.
which is classy, fast, turns and stops

If you determine that your Harley is what you want- check out a full package from a known builder who can show repeatable results. There are a few scattered around the country.
Fuelmoto has a great rep for customer service- they are forum sponsors, click the link & you can see what they offer for your bike, pricing and results.

If your having a reputable builder do your work, then I would sit down with them and tell them what you would like to achieve and your budget, any good builder could lead you in the right direction.

With proper a/c, exhaust and tune cvo 103s can make around 100/100. After that, the sky is the limit, but headwork and different cams is a good start. Find a good tuner/builder in your area and ask a lot of questions.

Ok this gives me some ideas and a place to start. Let's say I had between $400-$800 to start of with for a mod or two. What in your opinions would be some of the better starting mods?

look at a ness big sucker hi flow intake, w/ chrome backing plate

should be under $120 shipped from easternpc on ebay ( select the correct version for your bike).

your stock headers are fine unless you have substantial motor work- "slip on" hi flow mufflers.
I like the supertrapp disk style mufflers. they are adjustable/ tuneable and can be about as loud or quiet as the rider wants.
Screaming eagle sells a version of these call "fatshots" and they can often be found used for $250-ish.
there are other brands which you may find too loud or too quiet- best is to hear set-ups in person at a bike night.

you will need tuning compensation- many opinions on this. you may do well to see what fuel moto recommends for a tuner. probably something from dynojet- FM will help you with settings

this is your classic "stage 1" and you'll be within budget...pick up about 7 or 10 horsepower so maybe 80 HP or so. ( the 100/100 statement above has me scratching my head...the stock 103 is about 72 HP).

you will be reliable and mpg should drop only slightly if the tuner settings are correct

Never really kept track of the money spent on my upgrades but it was money well spent. I did the work myself and saved in that regard. The bike has really been woke up and has run flawlessly for several years now. No regrets! Brief description in my signature line.

With a $400-$800 budget, Call fuelmoto and see what they will put together a A/C/2-1 Header/tuner package for. Has everyone missed this is a CVO 103?? Not a run of the mill newer 103.
