Like QC said, check out SafeTravelUSA. It's a great resource and is kept very up to date. It's that time of year, so lots of road construction here in SD, both on the interstates and in Rapid City. For example, the main route that most people take through town to head south to Mt. Rushmore, Mt. Rushmore Rd/Hwy 16 is under construction and is going to be a big bottleneck for anyone whose GPS tries to send them on that route. I would recommend taking Catron Boulevard south from I-90 to avoid the Mt. Rushmore Rd. construction. Have fun and ride safe!

That makes so much sense. 75th anniversary, expecting upwards of 2 million people and bikes, lets tear up the roads that EVERYBODY will be riding on! Yaaay!

There is a 16 mile stretch of construction just west of Murdo. It's one lane both ways with a 65 mph speed limit.
There's resurfacing going on between Wall and Wasta. I think that is supposed to be done soon.
I've driven between Sioux Falls and Rapid twice this summer and the road construction wasn't a big deal. It didn't hold me up much and was fairly stress free.
I dislike it as much as anyone but it's an unfortunate necessity.

I went I90 to Rapid City over the fourth. And yes there are lane closures and yes, it wasn't to bad... 65 mph speed limit through the construction zone... yes. The 4th... The person that said that the asphalt was uneven and looks like like it had been driven on didn't know that that was the primer coat. Hopefully that will be finished. Also to the other person who said lane closures with 65 mph speed limits... Has never tried to get a million (expected) people down a one lane road. There is also a lot of, one lane bridge construction in several states BEFORE you get any where near SD. I spent over an hour trying to get through a one lane bridge in Missouri.

Good Luck!! And ride Safe

Yes, just returned from the Black Hills. Seems like I-90 is two lanes about every 50 miles from Lacrosse, Wi to Rapid city. Total road construction on 14a/85 in Deadwood and Lead. Going out we took mostly South Dakota 14 and 34. They were nice. Returning we rode Nebraska 20 and 12. Also very good with a little chip sealing which should be done by August. That spot in Lead is going to be a problem. Traffic is routed down like a paved alley. At the south end is a 90* corner around a building on an incline and immediate left turn for 14a/85 south. Throw in some alcohol and hot weather...yikes! Ride safe all. Doug
