Did he change clutch plates they could have glazed over and that will make them slip
Make it slip and than see if you smell something burnt,if so plates are burnt and slipping.and need replacing

i think fifth gear is a helical cut gear and side loads the trap door bearings pushing the clutch pack outwards, just like pulling the clutch lever in. does the clutch lever move when getting on it in fifth gear ? i think harley went back to the straight cut gear in later models. maybe mark from Baker will chime in here.

I still wonder if he may have synthetic fluid in there. It will cause slippage.

My bike was doing this exact thing. My fix was going to the Screaming Eagle clutch spring.

Go in and loosen or add more freeplay to the clutch in the primary & see if that helps. It could be that for some reason that the shaft might be getting forced in a direction that takes the freeplay out in fifth, which if it is doing that, it could be in the transmission. Which should be a warranty I would think.

Well guys thanks for all your replies. I adjusted the clutch at the clutch and found whoever put the clutch in did not tighten the lock nut on the shaft it was finger tight and found the shaft turned all the way in so the clutch probably was not releasing all the way. I adjusted it 1/2 out tightened the lock nut adjusted the cable and was good to go. Thanks again.

Default 5th gear slipping??

Gregg,

Glad you got it worked out. Yes mine is a 6 speed, it was really bothering me till I had it looked at and fixed. Nothing worse than having an issue and not knowing what it is that is wrong. Glad it got fixed!
