Excellent info - thanks guys! I'm gonna order up the HD outlet then, cuz it does just plug right in after all - and its less than $20 delivered - so what have I got to lose! Thanks for all the input!

I saw these at the HD store. They look 'waterproof' one the end as they have a cap to cover the power inlet and protect it from the rain. Howerver, if memory serves, the back-end (connection area) was 'open'. They seemed more in line to use on a bike with a fairing. so the connection area stays 'out of the elements'. Perhaps this is why they 'discourage' people from using it on their RK?
I guess I should have read the directions 'cause I installed one on my RK Classic on the left panel and have had no problems with it. seems to have plenty of room . If I had to guess why they say it will not work it might have something to do with the Cruise control module (I think it is on the left side) as the Classic is the only one that comes standard with that.
would this HD part #91843-97 work on a 2008 softail deluxe. Does anyone know if i might have the female plug under the seat to plug it into.I would like to have something to charge my phone with too. i could make a mounting bracket for it.

i use heated gloves in the winter - the coaxial plug is wired directly to my battery per the instructions. the plug hides behind a bottle bag on the left saddlebag guard. for other uses i made an adapter that is coaxial on one end that plugs into that wire and a female cigarette socket on the other that i can plug any ol' 12vdc thing into. if you make yourself one of these just be sure to test it with a voltmeter and be sure the center pin is positive. your electronic toys won't like negative voltage on the center pin!

Why not wire a permanent socket to your Road King bars, let it power on and off with ignition, and additionally have it wired into the left ACC switch so at your discretion power the socket while riding.

Lots of ideas on sockets, plugs, etc.
Here's mine on my Road King which I use for my Zumo ( the Zumo ram-mount is next to it):
It is wired into the nacelle.

1)do you have a battery tender pig tail under the seat?..get an adapter at radio shack to attach to it and a fused acc. plug extension at radio shack..cut off the plug end and only use socket end.
and plug it in to the pig tail in case of emergency
2)buy the acc. plug extension at radio shack and cut off the plug end and maintain the socket end..and tap into the acc. motorcycle plug under the seat.....always place fuse very close to power source..and consider running any (+) inside a small tube like/similar to a battery drain tube to avoid possible shorts..

I also saw a SE at the dealer that had one installed in the rideside cover...not sure how or if there is enough room, but pretty sure it was a cig lighter outlet...I'm going to check the space in my side cover to see.
