They are not the same.

You can get a service manual from a dealer, $48 from Board Tracker: http://www.boardtrackerharleyonline....nual-99483-03a

You can in theory view your owners manual on line at the Harley Davidson web site. You have to create an account and a profile for your bike, you enter in your VIN and once you've signed in you can view your owners manual on line. I'm not sure how many years back they go tho.

Owners manual is $16 to buy from Board Tracker: http://www.boardtrackerharleyonline....anual-99466-03

Default Manuals

It would be a good idea to get a parts manual also. It has all the part numbers for the bike and gives you kind of an idea how things are put together. They run about 45.00. Forget about Clymer manuals and buy paper as it is so much easier with greasy hands.

If you're going to do your own maintenance you definitely need the Service manual and parts catalog mentioned above. I'd also recommend the electrical diagnostic manual too. You can get all 3 at Boardtracker and they ship for free if you order over $100. Boardtracker is a HD dealership that sells at a discount, usually 20%.

Some of the Harley dealers have a micro fiche on their websites which shows parts and schematics for all the bikes. They also have the current prices listed for the parts.
Two that I know of are Ronnies Harley (http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.....asp?make=hdmc) and Granite Harley (http://www.granitestateharleystore.c...partfinder.htm).
Google em and look around.

I agree about buying the books, as already suggested. I use the on-line parts websites a lot, however the one thing they don't provide, which is available in the parts book as an annex, is precisely what each fastener is. Very useful.
