Default Mainshaft oil seal leak

Where would a mainshaft seal - the one behind the pulley on the tranny, drip from?

i have an oil leak that drips from the outer primary, just rear of the drain plug.

I'm going to change the inner primary oil seal and the shifter shaft seal.

I'm hoping to not have to pull the pulley, as i don't have the special tools for that job.

I've already pulled off the primary, and am concerned that the leak might be the tranny mainshaft seal, as its oily and dirty around the pully area.

The mainshaft seal will drip down the outside of the tranny case when parked and on jiffy stand and will be slung around from the rotating shaft starting behind the front belt pulley. Easy enough to verify leak path with a mirror and light. You will most likely find the leak is the inner primary seal. If the tranny is leaking may want to look at what bearing is allowing enough movement to let the seal leak.

Are you adding trans fluid or inner primary fluid?

added tranny fluid...

i'm fairly sure that the shifter shaft seal is leaking, as there is a trail from there...its just that around the pulley is dirty too, and that has me concerned. but the place it will drip from is right behind the primary drain plug, on on of those 'bumps' for the outer primary bolts.

i did see oil on the outside of the pully (put in some dye), i suppose the oil could be working its way all the way up the shaft to run down the inner primary...

i did put in a new inner primary seal and bearing last winter.

i should of also mentioned the bike is an 09' (ultra).

Maybe you need to just have the seal behind the pulley changed. I know on my '03 the tools to remove the nut and pulley were $700.

My '03 drips from behind the primary down to the drain plug bulge. I replaced my inner primary seal year before last so assume I must have nicked something during reassembly as the following year primary fluid started leaking fillup.

I often wonder if I have a bent output shaft from the tranny as it seemed the clutch hub had significant runnout. My thought is maybe a bent tranny mainshft can wobble the seal lip and leak. As for your tranny fluid, that shaft runs between the tranny and inner primary bearings so should minimize runnout.

Yes sadly you'll have to pull the pully/sprocket to replace thst seal. Don't know where thst other guy spent 800 on tools to pull the pulley but he got robbed. Socket and locking tool shouldn't be alot more than 150 together. Heartland has the socket for 65 and georges garage has the locking tool for around 90 bucks I think. You don't really need the seal installer tools , just tap them back in nice and even.Theres a seal for the main gear bearing and a seal inside the main drive gear that should be replaced while you're right there anyway. You should do the inner primary bearing and seal there too and check the clutch basket bearing.

Transmission shifter shaft seal. Replace with a Cometic seal.
