Default Over tightening oil filter

What happens if you over tighten oil filter. I used the oil filter wrench to tighten the oil filter, then saw in the manuel to do it by hand. Can you do damage buy putting on with the oil filterwrench.

Thanks, Steve

you can squeze the filter o'ring out of the filter seat and cause an oil leak. the same as you car or truck.

exactly. You just stand the risk of distorting the oil can and possibly causing a temporary leak. And it can be a PITA to take off after a few months

After you run it and the bike gets hot the filter is a real treat to get off when over tightened.

Everybody does it a little different. I snug the filter by hand and than give it a quarter turn with the wrench.

I have always just hand tightened it. Never had an issue or oil leak.

hand tighten, the extra 1/4 turn is unnecessary. Getting an overtightened one off is the issue.

Gasket contact , then 1/4 turn or you will fight it to get it off down the road. I would loosen it a bit before you get to that point.
