Default Help with Performance / Exhaust Upgrades on Road King

Hi All,

New member to the forum, looking forward to exploring the treasure trove of info to be found here. I'm hoping to get some input / suggestions on what some of the common mods might be when doing new mufflers. My 2010 Road King is stock with the exception of the S&S slip-on mufflers i just put on to get some more growl.

I'm ready to begin down the path of subtle mods and I'm wondering what other "must-do's" there might be at the same time as doing the mufflers to really take advantage of them or any other performance gainers. I'm assuming a new performance air filter is good pairing? Any recommendation there or anything else?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome to the forums- the commonly described "stage 1" is

high flow intake, hi flow exhaust and tuning

this can run a couple of hundred toa couple of grand for the "drop it at the dealer".

suggest: replace header with one without catalytic converter- ebay- $150
ness big sucker air cleaner/filter- ebay $120 from easternpc- make sure you get the chrome backing plate version.

tuning is tricky- tuners can be very complex r simple- how deep do you want to get into it?
Not much? - then look at the nightrider.com xieds- set for your 2010 would be about $125
more complex? look at fuelmoto.com for their offerings.

I have 5 years plus on the xieds, they just plug inline with your O2 sensors.

we are now at $300 and for that you'll get about 7 to 10 horsepower...without any compromise in reliability, mpg will drop about 1 mpg
Your exhaust note will be louder with the cat gone, the intake will also be louder- air rushing in.
the filter is an oiled fabric type, you'll be able to clean & re-oil and use it for years.

for the Guys who drop it at the dealer and spend $2000, they also get a power boost- about 7 to 10 HP...just like us cheepskates

Mike

First welcome to our Forum.

Mike Is Correct.

A lot of people here will help you spend your money.

First off get rid of the Catalytic Converter, and get some type fuel enriching device, there
are many out there. The wiser you research the parts you buy, the better off you will be.
Next question has any work been done to your Bike if any, by the previous owner ? ? If so what ? ?
That way we all can steer you in a general direction on Parts, everyone here has their favorites parts.

One name if you haven't heard of it yet; Fuelmoto.com. They have a wide variety of dyno sheets for tons of bikes, engine sizes and configurations.
First thing is to plan your future. If you don't want a beast, just get a stage 1 intake and a dealer download. At least it will run good that way.

Thanks on the input so far, much for me to dig into.

As far as the previous owner question, i bought the bike new. I've been the only owner and have only done routine maintenance up to this point so it truly is bone stock mechanically.

First on my list would be to find a tuner near you. Then you can pick his brain on what combo's he has had success with.

Mike sumed it up. Loose the cats in the headers.... high flow acand a tuner. I use and like the powervision for a tuner. Fuelmoto is very helpful in getting you set up.
