This chart shows the features that were on the Electra Glide over the years. Yellow indicates optional features. Blue is standard equipment.

yes/no/maybe

the evo was a mid year 1984 introduction...shovelhead left overs could be had as 1985 model year- so a slight overlap....afaik the 1985 shovel was likely to be a police/shiner/ parade model.
The 2 I know were a cop sidecar combo 3+R, and a shriner.

tranny...4 spd forward or 3 speed w reverse back before the panhead era on E or F models

Thumbs up

Great graph Dave!

According to my current favourite parts fiche website, the 3-spd with reverse was an option on shovels until around 1979. Probably deserves it's own line in the diagram. I'd also suggest the TC88 and TC96 could be separated. I'm sure several designs overlapped a bit with their replacements, such as shovels and Evos, which would be a helpful refinement.

I did not know that. So in 1984 some Electra Glides has the shovelhead and some had the Evo? I'm having a hard time verifying that.

Panhead era of the Electra Glide was just the 1965 model year. So that year you could get a 4 speed or 3 speed with reverse?

I understand the three speed with reverse was available until 1977

I'll add a note about the TC88 and TC96 but I say all the Twin Cam engines are the same engine. Sure they changed the displacement, they changed the cam chain tensioners and made many other changes. I don't think these refinements constitute a whole new engine. This is similar to the discussion I had with Jakedaniel. You may disagree but that's how I see it.

Dave - nice chart but the 4-speed was the standard, and 3-speed w/ reverse optional on all Harleys since the 1936 Knucklehead up until the 3-speed was discontinued.

Thanks. I did a search and it looks like the 4 speed transmission was on the '65 Electra Glide. The 3 speed with reverse was available up until 1977.
So I think the 4 speed was standard from the beginning of the Electra Glide until 1977 and the 3 speed with reverse was an option.
I'll update my chart and text.

Nice pics.
Know a couple guys that still have some of the bikes pictured still.
ALWAYS, knew I'd be on one ever since the early 80's and I am.
