Cam tensioner

The reason I was asking was I planned on changing them this winter and a funny noise when I was leaving work yesterday sent me to my father in laws to check my bike out versus driving 30 miles home and then back to his house at a later date.
Today after work we tore into it to see what was making the noise. We found the shoes from both tensioners in the bottom of the compartment.
I'm extremely lucky that I was five miles away and not half way across the state. Thank you for your help.
Tomorrow I'm checking the run out. I see gear drive in my future.

Do what you want it is your money, but I believe gear drive is outdated , and frankly not so good.
With an 08-16 cam plate, and some conversion cams they will be just as reliable if not more reliable then gear drive, if there is a slight scissor of the crank by a couple thousandths your gears would be toast , and probably an oil pump. With the new style plate, you switch over to roller chains which will probably never wear out the tensioner, but cam bearings probably need replaced every 80k ,or so anyway.
I have done this mod to my bike , and I love it.

It might not have been a bone stock 103 while sitting on the show room floor, but back then there where three options to choose from in performance upgrades.
Stock 88cui to a 95cui upgrade.
Then the 95cui could be stroked by having the case split and a stroker flywheel installed for a few dollars more plus the added tunes for the upgrades.
It all was only a matter of how wide one wanted to open their wallets while in the dealership.
Unless the OP's bike is not running now save your money and assemble the parts and come winter doldrums then take it to your mechanic and have them work on it.
Lots of time to do some deep research with good riding weather with us.
