New to touring, what to look for?

Earlier bikes with the HK head unit have an AUX input jack for your tunes. Some of the newer Boom Infotainment systems have a bluetooth option. On those you can also add a conventional AUX input as well.

I'm new to this forum and new to Harley Davidson but I've been riding for almost 30 years. I just bought a used bike from Craigslist last week. A 2012 Ultra Limited with 5,000 miles with abs for $15,000. I got a few helmets, 2 covers, a jack, battery charger, 2 intercoms to go with it. I think it was a good deal. It looks brand new.

I Googled, and found the attached reference to model year changes over time. For specific little details you might have to do more Googling. Also, renting from a HD dealer for a day or more is a great way to determine what you like. It gives you much more experience than a test ride.

I have a Road King and a Road Glide, both set up for my riding tastes and comfort - apes, seat, etc.
The Road Glide eats asphalt and concrete for a living - mile after mile, it's my draft horse and feels refined and is very comfortable. Long touring, 2 up, 1 up, Tour Pak, stripped, around town, whatever I throw at it, it does with ease.
The Road King is fun and is very refined as well, but the lack of fairing does expose the rider to the elements, especially without the windshield on. Without a fairing or shield, there's a lot happening at 80mph.
All that said, if I had to choose one bike only, for me, it would be the Road Glide.
Good luck choosing!

Welcome to this side of the fence. The King is surely a great choice and is very versatile. As mentioned, you can strip it down and it'd be a great cruiser, like your Slim, or add some touring features like a Tourpak and a detachable fairing for those long trips (yes you can add a detachable fairing and it mounts where the shield mounts).
Get as late a year as you can for your budget, even a 14+ if you can swing it.

I have FLHR and FLHTCU. I like windshield and no lowers in warmer weather. But I like the weather protection from a fairing, and tend to ride it more. Cool mornings an evenings. Plus extends the season.
I got trunks on both. Never take them off. Nice to have extra room to store warm gear during the mid day. Nice to be able to stop and get groceries or what ever. Plus trunk is a better height, and opens easy. I quickly outgrew the saddle bags.
