Default Newbie needs advice on heavy breather/tuner

Hello, I have a 2010 RG (first bike) and wanted to install a HD heavy breather. When I called the dealer, I was told I needed a tuner ($450) and I dyno ($300) to do so. Because I'm new to this, I didn't realize this was necessary. My question is should I be looking at an after market tuner or just trust the dealership with what they have. Unfortunately I didn't ask what brand they were going to install. If it helps, I can inquire. Thanks

No, you don't need the tuner and you really don't need the Harley tuner for just an air cleaner upgrade. When you get to that point, normally after an A/C and pipes, get an aftermarket tuner.

I'd suggest that you wait and figure out what your end desired result is.

"just" a high flow air cleaner isn;t going to do a thing for performance ( and the value leader is the ness big sucker- $120 ebay)

combined with a decatted header- $150 on ebay

and nightrider.com xieds/vieds - $120

you can see 7 to 10 horsepower gained.

if you think you might be wanting cams or other motorwork down the road, then another approach might be best

Mike

I hate to admit it but I will. The air cleaner is for cosmetic reasons only. I was told that it could not be installed without the bike being "tuned". If I can install it my self and save $750, I will. Plenty of time in the future for performance upgrades. Still getting my feet wet. Thanks

Arlen Ness Big Sucker Stage I for right @ a $100 new, sometimes find them on here for $50-75.
PC-V Tuner here and elsewhere for as little as a $100
I have the stock 09 head pipe non cat that I would be willing to let go of for right at a $100 as well.

If your new bike happens to have an aftermarket free flowing exhaust and a "Stage 1" air cleaner element and backing plate behind the stock cover, your bike has probably had a Dealer download already installed on it to adjust the stock OEM tune. If you've got the stock exhaust system still on the bike however, no tuner or Dyno tuning will be necessary because of the "choke point" for the air flow through the engine is caused by the catalytic converter in the header pipe. As for a tuning device, if you can operate a smart phone you can purchase a Fuelpak 3 for your tuner and you can then do all your future tuning by blue-tooth. It won't be 100% perfect but it'll get you close enough.

Thanks, I'll look into the Fuelpak 3.

Call Jamie at Fuel Moto and tell him what you are needing. He has packages that might suit your needs. Might be cheaper than HD stuff and better customer support. Just a suggestion!

You are getting good information above. On my '16 FLTRU I have installed all of my accessories myself so far. I put on a Crusher AC (I like the look), Rush Big Louie's, FP3 tuner and my 13" bars. I will be installing my Rush headers this weekend. If you have tools and can watch a video or are somewhat handy with wrenches, you can do your own work and save the $$$.
