Default Cam Noise in AC - Stock AC vs Open AC

Good morning All,

For those of you who have done cams, you know the noise I am talking about coming from the Air Cleaner. After 2 years the noise still bugs the sh*t out of me.

I was wondering, has anyone removed their open air cleaner and went back to the stock air cleaner (SE Upgrade of course).

Did this hide the noise to the point where you don't hear it at all?

Thanks,

Depending on how good your hearing is. I hear mine at idle, but it goes away once rolling down the road. Some have gone back to the football or other "closed" covers and it helps. I love my tune and don't want to mess it up. Personally, the reversion sound is worth the performance of my cams and tune.

Just curious, OP.....did you replace the lifters (tappets) when you put your cams in? I've been through the cam change exercise three times, and the first two times I did not put new lifters in, and the reversion drove me nuts too. The third time I put new ones in with the new cams, and the reversion was not nearly as pronounced.

I have NO idea if there's a correlation, so I am asking out of curiosity.

I dont notice anymore TB noise then pre cams, more valvetrain noise is a yes. new lifters and 57's. Installed a Crusher Street Sleeper III a/c. Has open back, lots of filter media and can be used with either Rushmore cover or football.

steelpony: This is not by any means empirical, but my theory is that when you marry brand new cams and push rods with used lifters, the outcome works, but maybe not quite as it would when new lifters are added at the same time. Sure....it works, and you'll get performance, but I wonder if the used lifters with new parts lends itself more to greater reversion. I would be interested in hearing from guys that know a lot more about this than I do.

Understand your frustration with the noise. Been there. The third time was a charm for me, and the only difference was marrying up new lifters with new cams and push rods. I still have reversion, but it's so little that I darn near don't even hear it anymore.

It was the first thing I noticed too, until changing the lifters. Oddly enough there wasn't enough miles on the bike to justify new lifters, so I waited. Should have just done right away. I used Gaterman lifters, a lot better than stock IMO.

I only had like 5,000 miles when the dealer did the cam work.
I will put the Stock AC back on right now, I hope that does it.

It'll mask the noise, for sure. Can you just put the football cover back on over your stage 1 air cleaner? That would be a whole lot better than putting the whole A/C back on if you have opened up everything else with a stage 1, exhaust system, and cams.

the stock air cleaner is there to ---CONTROL NOISE EMISSIONS !

you defeat that & it will be louder.

Put it back on and it'll be quieter.

you will likely see a loss in performance
